Moonlighter 2 Combat Guide: Rupture, Backpack Throws & Guns
The five attacks
- Normal attack: three hits (five for gauntlets).
- Attack Finisher: the fourth hit, more damage and knockback.
- Special: the class ability (spin, stab volley, spearhead recall, gauntlet slam).
- Special Finisher: a Special used right after the three normal hits, with increased damage. Several weapon aspects key off it.
- Gun: separate ammo, refilled by melee hits and breakables.
Class meters change the rhythm: Large Swords spend Sharpness on every swing and rebuild it with the Special; Spears leave spearheads in enemies and recall them; Gauntlets build Berserk. The weapons page lists every aspect’s effect.
Rupture and the backpack throw
At half health an enemy turns purple and enters Rupture. Hit it with the backpack to launch it: into a wall or another enemy for extra damage, off a ledge for an instant kill. It needs open space, so note the edges of every arena. Elites and minibosses do not rupture, but they are still stunned briefly by gun hits. Some bosses can only be damaged by throwing their own projectiles back: The Herald’s bombs and Thalaam’s bells.
Enemies
Enemies telegraph and then pause; count the pattern (one-two-three-four for most), land three hits and step back. Ranged enemies are the priority in every guide: the gun exists to remove them, and most reload after five or six shots, which is the safe window. Elites bring adds, and taser and stun effects fade much faster on the elite itself, so clear the adds first. Flying enemies are shot down and then thrown.
Perk paths
Combat pedestals offer run perks. Stacking one path (all Thunder, all Ignite) is stronger than mixing; put one path on the weapon and a different one on the gun. Thunder builds stacks per hit and detonates on the whole room; Ignite burns; Wound and Ice are solid modifiers; Foam is universally rated the worst; trap perks (Spikes, Genie, Taser) only matter in rooms with traps, which bosses never have. The full table is on the perks page.
Staying unhit
Several loot bonuses reward clean rooms: Nou’s Gift adds +6 quality to relics for each room cleared without damage, the Untouchable challenge perk gives +20% crit chance after two clean encounters. Movement is the tool: enemies struggle to hit a moving target, and the roll has long invincibility with almost no cooldown. Practising survival without killing in an early room, as one creator recommends, teaches the timings faster than fighting.
What the designers intended
In the November 2025 gameplay deep dive, design director Luis P. Montoro explained three choices behind the system: the gun rides with every weapon so ranged tools are never a loadout trade-off; each weapon class has inner mechanics (Sharpness, spearheads, Berserk) that perks can upgrade inside a run; and Andrei appears inside dungeons as an event vendor whose Weaponsmith perks “change the rules of the sword” rather than adding a stat. Hazards that spawn bullets when hit are deliberate survival tools, and relics were split from materials so that backpack decisions stay about quality, not about hoarding upgrade parts.
Bosses
Boss rooms cannot be left with the pendant. Save potions for them, learn the shield mechanic of the first two (bombs for The Herald, bells for Thalaam) and read the boss page for phases and drops.
